Rashid Johnson is an African-American artist based in New York. Rashid is known for his hybrid approach to art that blends photography, sculpture, and painting. Johnson uses everyday materials such as wood, plants and shea butter to create masterpieces. He explains his work as ‘a demonstration of the complexity of black experience’, with many areas of his work linking to black history.
Johnson’s famous work include ‘Untitled Anxious Men, 2015’ created on white ceramic tiles with black soap and wax and ‘Ahmad Ahmad, 2015’ using a range of materials including shea butter, vinyl and books. His most recent project is ‘Within our Gates’, a towering grid structure with plants and everyday objects placed on each level.
